icon05/03/2016 - Texas Gymnastics Loses a Legend

Once, there were giants in the land.....

Texas Gymnastics mourns the passing of one of the giants of our sport, Coach Emil Milan-the Father of Texas High School Gymnastics. This past weekend was the 50th Anniversary of the Texas High School Gymnastics Championships. A meet that has been called "The most exciting gymnastics meet on Earth".

Emil Milan had passion and a dream. He began the Texas State High School Championships in 1967. There were 40 total competitors. Today Texas High School Association is the largest in the country with over 1,000 high school student athletes participating in men's and women's gymnastics statewide.

Emil Milan had so looked forward to attending on this great occasion of its 50th Anniversary, but fell sick two days before the start of the Championships. Emil had Gall Stones removed on Tuesday, and then his Gall Bladder removed on Wednesday. Unfortunately some complications post surgery kept him in the ICU afterwards. Coach Milan took a turn for the worst last Sunday night and Monday morning around 5AM, he passed away-just hours following the conclusion of the 50th State High School Championships.

Emil was an Icon in Texas Gymnastics. His L.D. Bell Men's Team won 14 State Championship Titles in his 25 year coaching career at the school-an unparalleled accomplishment in any sport. His passion for the sport influenced thousands who continue to share that passion. Many of his gymnastics students were collegiate gymnasts, gymnastics instructors, coaches in high school, judges, meet directors, gymnastics equipment manufacturers, gym club owners, teachers, gymnastics clinicians, administrators on many gymnastics boards and the list goes on. He began the Texas High School Gymnastics Coaches Association, The Texas Gymnastics Judging Associations and was instrumental in forming the Gymnastics Association of Texas. His leadership and vision has made Texas one of the largest and most influential gymnastics communities in the USA.

Emil Milan's family, grew up in the American Sokol Gymnastics organization. A family organization. His inspiration came from Sokol to share the enthusiasm for our sport with others, like a family would share.

In Texas, we take great pride in saying that that family spirit and cohesion continues to exist in our gymnastics community to a greater degree than anywhere else in the nation. Why? Because this giant of a man has cast the long shadow of his vision, integrity, and love for the sport and all its participants across the vast landscape of Texas gymnastics for all time. We are all honored and proud to stand in that shadow of greatness. He will be remembered for what he has contributed to our sport. Even more, Emil will be remembered for the remarkably kind friend, wise mentor and inspiration he has been to so many athletes, parents, fellow teachers and coaches in this sport.

On behalf of the entire Texas gymnastics community we extend our prayers and deepest condolences to the family and friends of Coach Emil Milan. Rest in Peace Coach! We all miss you greatly.

icon01/03/2016 - Texas Men's Gymnastics App

I am pleased to announce our newest communication tool, the Texas Men's Gymnastics app. The main goal of the app is to insure accurate information flow from meet directors to the parents while easing the burden on the coaches. I would like to thank Jerit Pogue for spear-heading this project and volunteering to help administer it.
For meet directors, you will be able to post the info that you need the parents to have, i.e. schedule, admissions costs, link to google map or directions, special items like apparel, photographer info, or well-wisher ads. Additionally, we can send out push notifications which can be useful to warn parents of time changes, weather conditions, or traffic conditions. All meets on the Texas calendar are already in the app. To take full advantage of the app, please send a parent information sheet to Jerit Pogue. Include whatever information you want with the exception of the meet fee amount. Additionally, you can have a more customized link on the front page of the calendar for a fee of $50. This fee will go to offset the cost of development and yearly hosting of the app. Please send your checks to me at the address below made payable to "Texas State Account."
For the coaches, you will be able to ensure your parents always have the most accurate information, directly from the meet directors. We will not be posting meet fees or information that should only be seen by coaches. We are hoping that this will help reduce the time you spend on each meet getting info to the parents.
We need your help though. For this to be a useful tool, we need it in the hands of as many parents as possible. Coaches spread the word to your parents and meet directors announce it at your meets and on your meet websites. The app can be found on both iTunes and Google Play by searching for Texas Men's Gymnastics.
If you have any questions, please email Jerit or myself. I hope you all find this new app a useful tool!

Sincerely,

Wayne Thompson

icon07/07/2014 - 2014 Level 6/7 Region Team Camp Report

The top level 6 and 7 gymnasts in Region 3 met at Saginaw H.S. on June 26th through the 29th for the 2014 Region Team Camp.  Camp was both productive and a lot of fun.  We would like to thank eric Briley for opening his beautiful facility at Saginaw High School for us to hold camp.  Camp consisted of one training session Thursday, two on both Friday and Saturday and a new skill challenge on Sunday.

Camp staff this year was Sergei Pakanich, Todd Thornton, Glenn Morris and Dakota Qualls.  We could'nt have done any of this without our Region Team Coordinator Tom Meadows and Region 3 Chairman Bo Morris.  There were many visiting coaches this year.  All of which contributed in some way. Specific skills were trained on each event along with Future Stars skills.  We also had strength competitions among camp groups.

The out of gym activity on Saturday was at Burger's Lake.  With a few high diving boards, a trapeze into the lake and some of the most daring gymnasts around, let's just say "they went off!"

This years camp was a great experience for both athlete and coaches.  We hope we left them motivated to make it back to Region Team Camp for many years to come.

Thank you!

Glenn Morris (camp director)
